Leon Morris wrote, there was some powerful spiritual force holding back the would-be believer from making the right decision. He wrote that about the Jews in our text in John eight, yet it’s still true today!
Jesus was in the midst of a long discussion or teaching with the Jews, then He said to those which believed on him, if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, we are of Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, ye shall be made free?
The Jews told Jesus they were never in bondage to any man. Oh how soon they forgot where they came from. Exodus chapter one, now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. And he said unto his people, Behold, the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor: And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage.
It was hundreds of years after that when the Babylonians carried the Jews off into exile. Even as the Jews spoke those words they were under the control of the Romans, yet the Jews declared to Jesus they were never under any bondage to any man. The Jews were blinded to their present situation and completely disregarded their past. Plus the Jews themselves made laws that kept themselves and their people under bondage that went well past the Law that God gave to Moses. Yet the Jews firmly believed they were never under bondage to any man. In fact, they were probably insulted by the very words of Jesus when He said; you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.
Clearly their eyes were blinded by some powerful spiritual force that did not allow them to see the truth of their present situation. Paul wrote in II Corinthians chapter 4, in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
There is a powerful spiritual force in the world, he is the god of this world, his name is Satan, and he goes about seeking whom he may devour for he came to steal kill and destroy. As Paul wrote he blinded the minds of those who do not believe lest the light of the Gospel of Christ should shine unto them. Paul wrote in I Corinthians chapter 2, but the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Is your life bitter and full of hard bondage to sin? Are you lost and does the Gospel of Jesus Christ sound foolish and like a bunch of poppycock? It’s because Satan has blinded your spiritual eyes and has darkened your mind to the things of God and you are in bondage to your sin and to Satan and on your way to a fiery eternity.
Yet there is still hope, Jesus said He is the way the truth and the life, so when He told the Jews they shall know the truth and the truth shall make them free, Jesus wasn’t talking about just any truth, He was talking about Himself. When you come to a personal saving knowledge of Jesus Christ you will be set free from the shackles and chains of sin.
Oh you may continue to sin but as you grow closer and closer in your relationship with Jesus Christ the sin will decrease and the freedom and liberty that is only found in Christ Jesus will increase. The truth of Jesus Christ, His death, burial and resurrection, His shed blood for the forgiveness of sin shall set you free, for that powerful spiritual force, Satan, has been defeated upon the cross of Calvary.
