They had it all figured out! But it was a terrible thing for they sold their soul and colluded with destiny.
We return to out verse by verse study in the book of John, picking up in chapter 8 and verse 21. Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?” And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” Then they said to Him, “Who are You?” And Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.
The Feast of Tabernacles was about a week prior to this discussion that Jesus had with the Jews. He told them He is the Light of the World. He made it plain He was deity. He made it plain He was the Messiah. The Jews wanted no part of that, so in the latter part of verse 20 it says, “No man laid a hand on Him for His hour was not yet.” At the very least they wanted to run Jesus at out of town, better yet, they wanted Him dead. He was an outsider and a threat to the establishment of the day. So He had to go, but it was not yet His time so they laid not a hand on Him. Apparently, Jesus then left the treasury and somewhere outside the discussion picked up again.
Then Jesus tells the Jews, “You will die in your sins, so where I am going you cannot come.” By this point the Jews were oblivious to any sort of truth and had no idea what Jesus was trying to tell them. He was talking about going back to the Father after His death Burial and resurrection, but hey thought He was talking about suicide. The response of the Jews just shows their confusion and lack of understanding of reality. It is as if the Jews were living in their own little bubble and far removed from reality and no understanding of what Jesus had been telling them from day one. If we do not accept Jesus Christ as our personal savior, we too will die in our sins, but salvation is the free gift of God for all of mankind.
Then Jesus tells them again, “You are from beneath I am from above, you are of this world and I am not of this world. You will die in your sins because you do not believe I am He!” When Jesus said “He” He meant their Messiah, the light of the World, the perfect Lamb of God that would take away the sins of the world. Then the Jews had the audacity to look down upon Jesus in a condescending manner and ask, “You, who are you?” It is as if they were thinking; oh we know all about you, you were that little boy who grew up in Nazareth. You are just the son of Mary. You are the son of a carpenter. You don’t have the education we have. You are just a common man trying to make a name for yourself. You don’t have what it takes to become one of us the elite, the establishment, so we must put you in your place, we must take you out for you are ruffling our feathers.
II Corinthians 4:3 and 4 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. In all of their wisdom and education they became fools. They turned their back to the truth of Jesus Christ. They would die in their sins and would live all of eternity in Hell’s fire. They denied the truth of Jesus Christ, and believed a lie. They colluded with destiny!
We were all destined for Hell’s fire, but thank God, the Light of the Gospel of Christ shines even today. We can be on the right side of destiny; we can be on the right side of eternity. We can turn from our sin and unto Jesus Christ. Paul wrote, for I declare the Gospel by which we are saved, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that He was buried and that He rose again according to scripture. Jesus shed His blood; he died because ours souls are too important to collude with destiny!
