So how long can man live without the sun? It is interesting question isn’t it? Have you ever thought about it … life without the sun? Just imagine that big ball of flames up in the sky suddenly going out! The switch is turned off and natural light and natural heat are no more! It is a doomsday scenario. Life without light is impossible!
In John chapter 8 and verse 12 Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
The feast of tabernacles was now over, for how long, scholars don’t know, but they tend to think it was within a week or so of Jesus saying He is the Light of the world. For the most part, the large crowd of people that gathered for the great celebration had now gone home, but no doubt the powerful memories were still vivid in the minds of those who attended.
One of those vivid memories would have been the Illumination of the Temple which took place the first night of the feast. Four great candelabra were prepared for this grand occasion. When darkness fell upon the city of Jerusalem these four candelabra were lit and raised to the sky. According to the Mishna the light was so great from these candelabra that every courtyard in the city that was illuminated during this time. This was a night of celebration for the holy men of Israel as they danced and sang in the court yard praising their God. No doubt the candelabra were visible for miles and miles around reminding the Jewish people how God had led their forefathers in the wilderness by night with the pillar of fire.
It was with this background and with the memories so vivid in the minds of those listening to Jesus that He said, I am the light of the world. Surely when Jesus said this he emphasized the first few words I am! In the Greek the I Am is emphatic. Jesus expressed the I am in a strong and clear manner. I am the Light of the world. God told Moses, I am that I am. I am the great I am! So when Jesus said I am the light of the world, Jesus claimed to be God Himself.
Also, when Jesus said He was the Light the world the Pharisees would have understood the statement as also a claim to deity. In the Old Testament the Messiah is often referred to as Light. Psalms 27:1 The Lord is my Light. In Isaiah 60:19 The Lord will be your everlasting Light. So I am the Light of the world was sort of a double whammy on the heads of the Pharisees, yet they refused to understand. In just a few short verses the Pharisees would deny the claims of Jesus. No wonder John wrote in the beginning of his gospel, In Him, Jesus, was life, and the life was the light of men. And the Light shines in the darkness and the darkness could not comprehend it. But Jesus, the Light of the World will give life and light to all men who call upon Him in faith.
So in a doomsday scenario, how long could we live without the sun? What would life be like without the sun? If the sun ceased to exist, the world would be shot off into space at 67,000 miles per hour. But if the sun remained and light just went out, what would happen? Within nine minutes total darkness would cover the earth, the moon would never be seen again. Scientists estimate temperatures would drop below zero within a week or so around the world. Within a year the average global temperature would be 100 degrees below zero, eventually plummeting to 400 degrees below zero. Sooner than later, life would be impossible without the sun.
There is only one sun – S U N – that gives light and life to our world. Likewise, there is only one son – S O N- who gives life and light to our souls to our spirits, and that is the Son of God, Jesus Christ. He died for our sins according to the scriptures, He was buried and rose again the third day according to scripture. He is the only way to salvation. He is the only way to eternal life. There is only forgiveness of sin through His blood shed on the cross for you and me.
