It was more than a broken finger for this guy! In fact, the Bible says he had some sort of sickness or disease for thirty-eight years. In John chapter five, the bible says it was a feast of the Jews - many bible scholars think it was the Feast of Tabernacles – and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and He came to the pool of Bethesda. The Bible says many blind, lame and paralyzed people were there.
So in John chapter 5 verse six the Bible says, When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been in that condition along time, Jesus said to him, Do you want to be made well? The sick man answered Him and said, sir I have no one to put me in the pool when the water is stirred; but while I am coming another steps down before me. Jesus said to him, rise, take up your bed and walk.
The man’s belief in the healing waters of the pool resembles ancient custom or traditions of surrounding cultures where the sick would go to so called healing sanctuaries and hope an angel would heal them.
But Jesus was in town and noticed the man by the pool and asked the man if he wanted to be healed. Then Jesus told him to rise, take up his bed, and walk. I wonder how many of us need to rise, take up our bed and walk. Oh, we may not be sick like this man in the story, but certainly we need to listen to the words of Jesus and be obedient. So today, let’s focus on the word rise.
This man had been sick for 38 years and had not yet given up on healing. He still had a desire. God placed desires and dreams within your heart, maybe they have been there for 38 years or longer, and you haven’t acted upon them.
Maybe God is telling you to rise. Maybe it is time for you to start bringing those desires about. God has a calling for your life. He has plan for your life. He has put that desire in your heart for a reason. Is now the time to rise and put that desire into action. I was watching a video on finding your calling. The lady said, if you are running from something, that might be your calling. What are you running from? Could that be your calling? Could that be the desire God wants you to rise to?
Hebrews 12:1 says, therefor since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and sin which so easily ensnares us. We all have our own sin that so easily ensnares us, entangles us, that holds us back from all we could be in Christ.
Is God telling you to rise from such sin? The bible says lay it aside, put it down, let it go. The Bible says Jesus Christ has crucified the flesh. You no longer have to carry that weight and sin around. The Bible tells us to consider ourselves dead to sin but alive to God. Rise, put the sin behind you. You no longer have to live by its desire. You are alive to God. You are no longer a slave to sin, but a slave to righteousness. You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. So rise to God’s desire!
Finally, do you need to rise to salvation? Have you ever asked Jesus Christ into your life? Have you ever come to that place in your life where you knew you needed a savior?
We are all in the same boat, we all need a savior. Jesus Christ tells us to rise to Him. He is the way, the truth and the life. No man comes unto the father except through Him. He is the only way to heaven. He is the only way to eternal life. Have you accepted Him as your savior? He is waiting for you to rise to receive eternal life through Him.
