He didn’t have any one to help him, he couldn’t get there fast enough, and he couldn’t put himself into the water before someone else would beat him in, and then he would have to wait for another stirring of the waters before he could get healed. So Jesus had compassion on the guy and told him to rise, pick up his bed and walk.
It seems the man didn’t even recognize who Jesus was for he just called Jesus Sir. Maybe that is why he wasn’t expecting Jesus to heal him, for when Jesus asked if he wanted to be healed, he replied, I have no one to put me in the pool while the water is stirred. So after Jesus told him to rise, pick up his bed and walk, the Bible says, immediately the man was made well.
If you have asked Jesus Christ into your life, if you have been born again, you too have been made well! The Bible says old things have passed away and behold are things have become new. You are a new creation. Your spirit has been made alive. You no longer have to be ruled by your circumstances, you no longer have to be ruled by the flesh or by the five senses. The Bible says to walk by faith and not by sight.
You talk about a guy who picked up his bed and walked, and walked by faith, it was Abraham. Oh he wasn’t’ perfect by a long shot, he made his share of mistakes, but he hung in there, he didn’t quit. You can read the complete story of Abraham in ten or fifteen minutes, but his story, his walk lasted one hundred years. No doubt more than 100 years, that is just the years recorded in the Bible. He was 75 years old when God first told him to get out of his country, from his family, and from his father’s house, to a land God would show him! Has God showed you a country that He wants to take you to?
Is God telling you to move? Is He telling you to move to another city, another state, another country? Is He telling you to pick up your bed, to gather your belongings, and move to a land He is showing you? Has He placed some city, some state, and some country upon your heart? Does some place continue to pop up in your life, no matter where you are, no matter what you do? If so, God may be telling you to pick up your bed and walk to that place that He has for you. Walk by faith to the land God is showing you!
Twenty five years later Abraham and Sarah gave birth to Isaac! Abraham was 100 years old, and Sarah was 90 years old, well past the child bearing age, but yet Isaac was born. It was just one year before when they got the news they would have a child, as the Bible says, “according to the time of life.” But Sarah laughed and questioned the possibilities. Yet, the three men who delivered the news asked, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”
What challenge, what impossibility, what obstacle are you facing? Is the career not going where you wanted it to go? Does it seem as if you are stuck in a rut and the job is at a dead end? Maybe technology has outpaced your skills and now you feel as if there is no place for you to go. It’s not so much about your skills and ability; it’s more about your availability to Him. It’s not about you; it’s about Him. So walk by faith - hour by hour, day by day, week by week, and month by month. Ask yourself; is anything too hard for the Lord? Of course not! So pick up your bed, pick up your shattered career and own up to it, because God hasn’t forgotten you. Walk by faith. Walk by faith.
It was some years later, the Bible doesn’t say exactly how old Abraham or Isaac were, when Abraham took his only son, Isaac, and offered him as a sacrifice, but then God stopped Abraham and provided a ram in the thicket. Abraham was willing to let go of his son if that’s what God required, but he walked by faith that God would provide, and God was faithful; He provided a ram in the thicket for the sacrifice.
Nearly two thousand years later, God offered His only Son upon the cross of Calvary for a helpless and hopeless mankind. Just like the man at the pool who couldn’t do anything about his situation, all of mankind is in the same boat, helpless and hopeless without a Savior. So if Jesus Christ is not your Savior, ask Him into your life and walk by faith!
